May 2018 – A Textile and Quilting Weekend in Windsor

We have another fabulous weekend retreat to announce this month – this time at the majestic Beaumont Estate in Royal Windsor,with the very talented tutors – Gail Lawther and Kathleen Laurel Sage.

Birds provide the soundtrack to our lives, and all the projects that Gail Lawther is offering on this retreat in her Beautiful Birds workshop, are inspired by our feathered friends: you’ll find garden birds and seabirds, pheasants and flamingos, doves and chickens, herons and puffins – and loads more besides. Whether you’re a complete beginner to patchwork or an accomplished stitcher, this is an excellent weekend for extending your skills and learning new ones, with a wide variety of different techniques on offer for creating the projects, including – of course– Gail’s ‘signature’ Stained Glass Patchwork. Or why not come and layer, solder and stitch with Kathleen Laurel Sage. She will guide you through the techniques needed to create your own layered, soldered and stitched project, including some simple steps to design your own masterpiece. She will help you decide on a design, either drawn by you or from a selection of patterns and kits. Book of the Month

If you’re thinking about coming to Gail Lawther’s retreat, why not try her new book, which is our Book of the Month for September. ‘Doodlebugs’ shows you how to use Gail’s quick and easy methods to create these cute dragonflies, butterflies, moths, beetles and bees. This week’s videos

This week Angela Daymond is working with Inktense pencils to create beautiful pictures and designs. Angela has some great hints and ideas for using these pencils, which are also water soluble – you’ll see how much the colour changes when you add just a bit of water to it. In this textile workshop you’ll learn how to blend colours, add iridescent effects and see how the effects can be used on different textile and textured mediums Watch Now+

Meanwhile another Angela, Angela Madden, is using her Feathering tool -a rather unique template for making wonderfully unique quilting designs. In this useful free tip for all members, she shows you the best way to stitch the feather wreath pattern which avoids double stitching the feathers and tying in the ends (don’t we just love time saving tips from the experts). Throwback Thursday

Our Throwback Thursday this month, from our Archives, is a ribbon embroidery workshop from Lorna Bateman. According to Lorna if you can do embroidery stitches,then you can work with silk ribbon and in this workshop she guides you through how to make the roses, the petals, rose buds and other lovely flowers which can then be used in your projects.
