Meet – Kathleen Laurel Sage – Textile Artist
This lady just has a passion for machine embroidery and loves to use organza and water soluble film. Her signature work gives a modern twist to the traditional favourite of cutwork – one of Valerie’s favourites – and we are sure you enjoy the workshops that will be coming up on the site later in the month. If you can’t wait until then, her book is available in the shop.
Workshops
You can make this delightful needle case and scissor case combo using Sashiko Stitch and guidance from the Stitch Witch – there is a complete kit for you to purchase so you can start sewing straight away, and Lynette explains why she likes to use Insulbrite wadding. (and if you enjoy Sashiko stitching you can learn more about it in the technique section)
Scraps and offcuts
Valerie gives you some ideas on how to use those stitch n flip offcuts, and the half-square triangle units.
Then maybe you could think about using up squares to make yo-yo’s (or Suffolk puffs as we used to call them); these are great for adding simple and easy dimension to your quilt – and Jennie even made a Caterpillar! (well she would, wouldn’t she!!!)
And did you know that Jennie is bi-lingual in patchwork – don’t miss her Fancy Fandango (which does have a serious side and workshop notes!)
Quilts in Cae Hir Gardens
This annual event only works if they have quilts on display! Closing date for entries is 18th July – there is no ‘theme’ for the entries, but be aware that they will be out in the open. Have a look through your finished stash and see if you can spare one. To see what we are talking about you can wander round with us from a couple of years ago (and it was wet for our day!)
For more information and entry forms, visit the garden website: http://www.caehirgardens.com/#!quilts/chvi
And the gardens are worth visiting too!
Product of the Month
Our new Product of the Month is now available. This allows you to purchase our selected product with FREE p&p for UK purchasers for that month PLUS you get free entry into a draw to win a free month’s subscription to the site.
For June 2015 we’ve chosen this Japanese Nickle Pack & Strip Roll from Creative Quilting which is exclusive to Justhands-on.tv. You’ll get 20 squares @ 5″ (2 each of 10 different fabrics) and 10 strips at 2 ½” x 40″ of co-ordinating fabrics in the strip roll.
If you want inspiration for using these lovely fabrics then have a look at the 1930’s Scrap quilt that Valerie made – wouldn’t it be great in these Japanese fabrics!.
Book of the Month
June’s Book of the Month – Fat Quarter Shuffle from Annie’s Quilting is a delightful book totally dedicated to the use of fat quarters; pick six complementing fabrics, select a project and do the Fat Quarter Shuffle! The projects vary from quilts through tote backs and some table settings.
Be warned – one project won’t be enough!

This stitchery project is quite small but ideal for beginners and experts alike.

PS: Technical update
A recent Windows software update may have caused a problem to those of you trying to view our videos in Internet Explorer. To fix this, – if you go to a video page, and look at the bottom of the screen, just above the task bar at the bottom, you will see a thin long box which at the left end says ‘Only secure content is displayed’ and at the right end is a button that says ‘Show all content’. Just click on the ‘Show all content’ button and wait while the page refreshes itself and the video will appear.
