3rd August 2012
August already! – does that mean holidays or Festival of Quilts? Well the latter is coming up in the middle of the month (16-19 August) at the NEC in Birmingham and once again part of the evening entertainment will be a Fashion Sans Frontiers extravaganza; those taking part from the UK will be Jennie Rayment ,Angela Madden, Helen Deighan, Sally White (owner of Threads & Patches) with her students and Midsomer Quilting and their students.
And to get you in the mood we have re-activated the very first event, the UK v. the Russians, which we were priviledged to film; it was such a fun event and our girls really pulled out all the stops: some of the highlights include students from the Inkberrow Design Centre using recycled items; Ferret with her Phoenix rising cape; Angela Madden’s use of weedsurpressant material; Helen Deighan with her matching rainbow dress and hat; Annette Claxton with her whispy thin coat of patterns (and check out her change of hairstyle) and our Jennie with whip and thigh length boots!

If you are in the mood for some workshop inspiration then today you can join Mary Gamester who makes a lovely snowflake cushion using transfer paints and we enjoy meeting her and seeing her lovely quilts, including one that was involved in the recent ‘Secret Messages’ exhibition at Blechley Park – home of the Enigma machine.
Next week you can enjoy making a delightful Tote bag with contrast flaps, which was designed by India, a student a the Royal School of Needlework on their degree course. The Royal school do run workshops during the summer and more information can be obtained by going to their website www.royal-needlework.org.uk/learn
Later in the month Carolyn Forster joins us and we learn about her and her quilts and she shares with us the secret of joining wadding with a suture stitch – perfect for keeping the wadding just touching in her quilting-on-the-go technique.
Val had some fun making a scrap quilt in real time to camera and you can see how she got on – it took just 40 minutes (if you ignore the preparation time! ) – but a great way to use up your strips.
And the lovely new pattern by Sue Rhodes ‘Log Cabin Basket Throw’ which combines traditional log cabin blocks (one of Val’s favourites)used in the background and as the basket, with appliqué (another of her favourites) in very modern colours –

If you like handwork and wanted a small project to take with you on holiday what about either of these new (to us anyway) kits from Sylvia Critcher – one a pincushion called Jubilee Rose and the other a lovely Flutterby design for a small cushion.
