How do you cut the strips for Log Cabin?

This is the question from Janice: like you I just love the look of the log cabin and am about tho venture down this road.  Can you tell me - is the strips cut on the bias or just straight across?   Here is our answer:
ALWAYS  assume that strips are cut ACROSS your fabric unless you are told otherwise - when you cut down the grain is very unforgiving and when you cut on the bias your quilt will  wave!!!

What to watch here during August 2013

There are five Fridays in this month – so lots to view – and we start off by continuing to wander round the Textiles in Focus (2013) exhibition where we meet up with Lynda Monk who demonstrates how she used Lutradur and puff  paint;  and  Jean Wright who is also demonstrating – but this time her love is goldwork;   we also enjoy more of the Fen Edge Textiles exhibition that was on display.

Query about needles

Here is the question: Hi, I have a Brother RH127 sewing machine, can you please tell me what size needle I require to stitch denim. I shall be making a denim patchwork cushion cover so will need to stitch through more than one layer. Kind regards, My answer was that I would try a denim needle (or on reflect a jeans needle) size 90/100 as these are robust.

The Modern Quilt Guild

There is a new and rapidly growing quilting trend that started on the Internet - Modern Quilting which I think is very exciting;  I just love the simple use of colour and design and will be sharing a simple one with you soon.     Do you love modern quilts too?    Would you like to see more at a show maybe in 2014/15 here in the UK?

A question about Rosebud Fayre Block of the Month

This is now in the archive section of the site but the question from Cythia was: I was wondering as a paid member if I might be able to see this Block of the Month series on Rosebud Fayre?
Answer:
Yes we can organise that for you;  we usually put videos (from the archive) up for a week but as this is a series would you like them spaced weekly OR all at one go!   We could put them up for a month maybe?

A question about applique

Question: Hi have just recieved Mandy Shaws Follow your own star quilt pattern and have already become stuck with the applique angels.  They all have different coloured drsses on, so do l first cut out the whole angel then cut out the different parts of their clothes and then fuse them on to the background angel so it appears they are dressed ?

Various comments from you

I have just watched 'Knotting Off Your Threads' with Valerie and would like to say thank you for sharing such a great method. I was taking both threads to the back, tying them off and then weaving in the ends which seemed to take longer than the actual quilting! A great time saver thanks :)

Jan Brown   Re: Leaders and Enders That's ingenious...Lyn   Yet again my fingers are itching to start sewing after watching the Leaders and Enders video.

What to watch here July 2013

We are starting the month off with our visit to the Textiles in Focus exhibition that was held in Cottenham village back in February (dates for 2014 are 21/22/23 February) where we met up with Camilla from Outward Images;  Sharon Osborne and the Art Van Go stand and Jamie Malden from Colouricious;   plus  a lovely demonstration from the organiser Pauline Verrinder who shows us how to make 3D items such as seed heads with old scrim.

This was the one I chose

National Patchwork Championships at Sandown, June 2013 As a judge you are allowed to choose one that you would like and this was my choice.  It is entitled (Un)Pick and Mix by Cherie Cheetham.   This is (as you will know) in my favourite colours but Cherie did a great job and it hung beautifully - despite having lots of bias seams in the construction - so well done.
