Ipad Cover a great success

I wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and also to share my completed i pad cover with you, which is a gift for my neighbour for Christmas.
I found the instructions easy and the end result looks a lot more complicated than it actually was.  Fabrics found in the Lady Sew and Sew Warehouse in Henley.

Many thanks for the continuing inspiration, I've only been quilting for eighteen months and find your website very helpful for techniques, tips and inspiration.

Best wishes,

Roberta

Old Christmas Cards – what do you do with them?

Christmas cards in a pile ;  what now?  Check them off a list and then recycle?  Well yes but I also check through them for inspiration - while I am still in the Christmas mood and all that Christmas fabric is still looking at me. Here are a couple that I know I will work on: I just love the curly papercut tree and reindeer:   plan is to enlarge and then trace onto Heat N Bond and then just fuse onto a winter background.

Tote-it-all Bag in production

Just to say a big thank you for the tote bag workshop.  I saw it yesterday afternoon and am now the proud owner of six new shopping bags. They were a great way of using up some very odd jelly rolls I bought on line and which had some very odd novelty prints in them.  However made up as bags they look great!

Do I have to use cotton fabrics in my quilt?

We tend  to use cotton fabrics in quilts as they are easier to use and wash and we have a huge range of wonderful fabrics now being commercially designed and produced just for us. But  you can of course use any fabric you like;   try to determine what the fabric is, as this will make it easier for you to understand how it will behave not only while you are sewing it, but also when the quilt/project is finished.

What to Watch in January 2013

Inspiration We start off with lots more inspiration from the Hope Quilters’ Exhibition with Sylvia Critcher acting as our guide. Workshops to enjoy The workshops this month include a really quick JR bag – that’s Jennie Rayment but it could be Jelly Roll;  a really quick Stripey Quilts from Valerie and how to machine quilt it very simply;  and Valerie shows you how to create a Tumbling Blocks quilt by hand - the display quilt is stunning.

Happy New Year

Do you make New Year's Resolutions?   Well mine is to sort out and then use more fabric! As well as completing more quilts - turning the tops from WIP's into real quilts.  I was doing well at the end of the year as I had a  good couple of days with not much going on - so I hope to continue !!!!

Stressbuster video

This has been up on Youtube for a while but we thought we would add it onto the site on Christmas Day for you all to enjoy;  here is one comment from someone who has already seen (and enjoyed) it:     Thanks to everyone for showing us the delightful film.  I think that was one of the nicest trips you made.

3D Tumbling blocks quilt

This traditional quilt made by one of my students with modern fabrics  inspired me to share a handpiecing technique with you - all filmed and coming in the near future: More pics in the Show & Tell page.

Traditional Tumbling Blocks

This lovely quilt was made by hand (but not with papers) by Jo Willows and she used lots of fabrics that had a real meaning to her and the famiy - so a great heirloom memory quilt as well.   Hand sewing is very portable and very sociable and Jo finds that this fits her lifstyle alongside her machinework. If you are inspired we will be sharing the 'how to' with you shortly!

Man walks all day to produce snow patterns

Artist Simon Beck must really love the cold weather! Along the frozen lakes of Savoie, France, he spends days plodding through the snow in raquettes (snowshoes), creating these sensational patterns of snow art. Working for 5-9 hours a day, each final piece is typically the size of three soccer fields! The geometric forms range in mathematical patterns and shapes that create stunning, sometimes 3D, designs when viewed from higher levels.

What you can enjoy watching on the site in December 2012

An Exhibition to wander round We have started the month off with a wander round the Hope Quilters’ Exhibition that was held in Kent earlier in the year;  this was a fantastic exhibition organised by Sylvia Critcher to showcase the work created (and finished!) by her students over the previous 3 years – and boy is there a lot of it!  (so this is just part 1!) Still time to make things for Christmas As Christmas is just around the corner we thought you might like a couple of really quick ideas to help with making some wonderful woven cards (but these will be good for other occasions too) from The Stitch Witch plus a really quick last minute wall hanging decoration from Valerie.

Dresden Plate and Grandmother’s Fan

These traditional patterns work so very well for scrap quilts but here are some that Valerie put together from petals sewn by one of her students: The challenge was to see what different settings worked and also how to use up the various petals which had been made at random!
