To wash or not to wash your fabric ?

In today's world of pre-cuts pre-washing your fabric is not always possible; Question: Some time ago you had a little talk with Jenny about the pro's and con's of washing or not washing patchwork cotton material.this means I do know that it appears to be an individual choice.---- However, I found that the limpness and the sometimes distorted outcome of the washed material quite a challenge when doing small precision pieces.
Spray starch is also not the answer, as it invariably is not applied equally over the fabric.
I really do not feel like washing any more except where the material has either been from an old garment/article or it is soiled.
Have you got any kind of advise I might have so far overlooked?

Rail Fence -what happens when I use more fabrics?

Here is a comment from one of our viewers: Made your rail fence with 4 strips but the pattern did not work out for 2 reasons. Firstly my dominant colour was second so didn't make the zigzag pattern. Secondly I used 2  similar fabrics so they got lost.
It would be helpful to say the dominant colour(s) look best in first or fourth position.

I've undone the 9 squares and managed to replace a strip so my dominant colour is first and am now really happy with the block.

Happy New Year

My wish for 2015 is that all our viewers remain happy and healthy and have lots of time to sit back and enjoy our workshops and videos. Pause for that coffee or glass of wine and be inspired;  we have lots of new contributors organised to be filmed  - so here's to a great sewing year ahead for all of us.

Wish quilt for the new addition to the family

This was made by Lyn using the modern charm quilt workshop as inspiration: she asked the family to each send a couple of wishes by email..then printed out their handwritten wishes, then traced the words onto the border and backstitched the words   Isn't it lovely! (and the new addition is gorgeous too!)

Out & About on the Site

Today we join the London Quilters at the opening ceremony of their biennial exhibition called ‘Coming Home’;  the exhibition runs through until 4th January at the Swiss Cottage Library in London NW3.   You will see that Tracy Chevalier (author and quilter) was there to do the official speech and we were excited to be able to interview her about her own very first quilt – which is also on display at the exhibition.

Filming date with Kate Crossley

Spent a really lovely day yesterday with Matt & Dave at Kate's house filming some of the great textile work that she creates;  We also got to take a long good look at the wonderful Grandfather Clock she made and entered into the Quilt Creations section of Festival of Quilts 2014     (thanks to Robert Crossley for the picture) - for which she won the 1st prize - which you will see was/is well deserved.

Pizza Topping a success

I have just watched Valerie Nesbitt’s demonstration on making a Pizza Topping with scraps. What a very useful idea, I shall certainly be more frugal with my left over bits and bobs. Thank you, Ann Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your pizza topping workshop! Great fun. Jo and now Linda Seward has shown us how to create Confetti Applique.
