Visit Jane Austen
We start the month with a really fascinating visit to The Jane Austen House museum in the south of England where we learn that one of the world’s most beloved authors was also a seamstress of considerable ability and skill using English Paper Piecing and fussy cutting to create a coverlet (something that has no wadding); as well as hearing about the recent Community Quilt project she inspired. Sampler Quilt
This month you can watch our Sampler Quilt series which will be perfect for all those who are new to patchwork, as well as those with some sewing skills; the basic quilt will have 9 blocks, but there will be more alternatives as the month’s progress to make 15 blocks, and at the end we will cover borders, layering, quilting and binding. We start with Valerie helping you select the fabrics, and then later in the month move on to the first block, so plenty of time to pop out and look for materials. Watch Now+
Product of the Month
Our product of the month for September is this Kimono Layer Cake from Makower. It’s a pack of 40 x 10″ squares of this fabric from the complete range of 20 fabrics. This is a vibrant Japanese inspired collection with metallic gold detailing on cream and dramatic black backgrounds.
As the Product of the Month for September 2018 it comes with free P&P in the UK PLUS entry into a draw for 1 months FREE subscription More Info +
As you can see Valerie has been busy using her pack of layer cake. She has used the range of 10″ squares as they are – no additional cutting required.
She then created this interesting (but simple) sashing from strips of black and gold with gold squares acting as cornerstones.
If you like the sashing, Valerie used it in her Modern Pieced Hearts quilt, so you can find the workshop notes here.
Women’s Hour
Last month we blogged about a lovely quilting piece on Woman’s Hour on Radio 4. The piece, which was part of ‘Listener’s Week’, was all about how quilting is at the heart of our communities, be they local or online. Have a read of the blog and see how you can join an online group run by Naomi Clarke (@naomialicecby) using the hashtag #fussycuttingsewalong on Instagram. Read Now+
