Description

Tilted Square block and Variable Star block – both with some interesting piecing techniques from Paula.

Two more small blocks from Paula, for which you do need to make templates.

The Tilted Square block uses a half rectangle templates and a partial seaming technique.  Paula guides you through reminding you that the template for the half-rectangle needs to be used always in the same direction – NOT mirror imaged, and then shows us how the partial seam technique works.

For the Variable Star block, you need three templates, but be aware that the star is made up from a Parallellogram shape, not a diamond.  THis block also requires inset piecing – or the Y seam technique, – which is certainly much easier by hand than by machine.

Paula talks you through the piecing sequence for this and reminds us again about how important it is to pay attention to the grain of your fabric  – by ensuring that the pieces that sit on the outside of each block have a straight grain (and not a bias) you avoid the block being distorted both in pressing and when it’s added into your quilt and quilted.
