Dresden Plate and Grandmother’s Fan

These traditional patterns work so very well for scrap quilts but here are some that Valerie put together from petals sewn by one of her students: The challenge was to see what different settings worked and also how to use up the various petals which had been made at random!

How do you do an applique flower with 4 layers?

This was a question posed to us by Sandra: and here is my answer:   The easiest way to do this layered flower is to put the first piece down - i.e. the largest, and sew all the way round; turn the work over and trim away the excess fabric (i.e. the background fabric) from beneath the flower leaving approx 1/4"  (if you watch the tip for the grandmother's fan you will see what I mean;)click here:

then add the second, smaller flower, turn the work over and again trim away the excess fabric;   and you then repeat for each of the layers - that way you keep the fabric from being very bulky and it is easier to quilt through - even by hand.

Another great filming day with Jennie and Valerie

Before the whole of the UK seemed to be shut through snow Jennie and I managed to get together with Dave and Matt for a most productive day in front of the camera's. There were cats, chickens, hexagons, patriotic red, white and blue, a serger, some crazy - and that's just from Jennie !!!!! Valerie managed some recycling (of men's shirts), a trip to a cafe and some grandmother's fan handwork as well as this delightful Caddy Pad - which is  a travelling tote for your iron with some heat resistant fabric so it doubles up as an ironing pad.
