Description

Use Jelly Rolls or Scraps

This traditional pattern stands the test of time and the small block with its diagonal split of colour can be sewn together in a wide variety of different settings.  It is very similar to the log cabin block which has a diagonal split of colour. The Barn Raising setting used in this quilt is also very traditional.

Create Quick Half-Square Triangle Units

The block can obviously be made up in any size, but in the workshop we have chosen to use 2″ finished units which means that the cut strips are 2 1/2″ – so you could use a jelly roll (or similar).  It also means that the half-square triangle units are made quickly and easily and without any waste by using the Thangles product which we will show you how to do.

Use Thangles to Avoid Waste

If you want larger blocks, just think of the finished size of the unit you want to use.  For example, a 3″ would give a 9″ finished block;  a 4″ would give a 12″ finished block, and so on. If you want to use Thangles for these too, you just buy the pack that has the finished size on the front.  Most sizes are available from Creative Quilting – just email them: isabelle@creativequilting.co.uk.
