This traditional pattern takes on a new life with today’s fabrics and methods.
Use Jelly rolls or Scraps
This traditional pattern has stood the test of time and the small block with its diagonal split of colour lends itself to being sewn together in a wide variety of different settings – very similar to the log cabin block (which is another that has a diagonal split of colour). The Barn Raising setting you see used in the quilt is also very traditional.
Create Quick Half-Square Triangle Units
The block can obviously be made up in any size, but in the workshop we have chosen to use 2″ finished units which means that the cut strips are 2 1/2″ – so you could use a jelly roll (or similar); it also means that the half-square triangle units can be made quickly and easily and without any waste by using the Thangles product – and we again show you how to do this.
Use Thangles so as to avoid waste.
If you want larger blocks just think of the finished size of the unit you want to use – 3″ would give a 9″ finished block; 4″ would give a 12″ finished block etc etc. (and if you want to use Thangles for these too – you just buy the pack that has the finished size on the front) and most sizes are available from Creative Quilting – just email them: email@example.com
