We begin our wander round this lovely local exhibition by local quilters with our guide Gigi Langlois-Pearson.
The membership of 74 women are from all walks of life and all stages of life and their knowledge and love of sewing and patchwork/quilting binds them together – like a patchwork quilt. They celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2011 and decided to share their most recent works in this exhibition (there were 93 quilts on display).
We get to learn about the history behind a quilt that was ‘rescued’ by Rosemary Lomax and also discover a clever way of making a watercolour quilt with Doreen Plumridge – a sort of reverse dyeing technique – as well as enjoy a variety of other quilts on display.
Guildford Quilters members support various charities within the Guildford area and the chosen charities for 2012 are the Surrey Air Ambulance; The Grange – Inspiring Independence in Bookham (www.grangecentre.org.uk) as well as their ongoing support of the Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Surrey Hospital for which they make small quilts which can then be adopted by the parents and taken home with the baby.
SPECIAL NOTE:Guildford Quilters received (in Oct 2012) the Unsung Hero Award from the ROyal Surrey County Hospital in recogniation of their 10 years of making quilts – well done to them!
