Description
Prism Textiles host an annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in Pall Mall London each year and this year we went along to see it. The aim of the group is to bring to the public work of the highest quality both to highlight the breadth textile practice can extend to, but also to challenge notions of the textile as simply decorative and domestic.
The membership of the group is worldwide and is currently 74 strong and no longer affiliated; applications for membership are now invited on an annual basis with the closing date of mid-July. You can find more on their website at www.prismtextiles.co.uk
Featured artists in this section are:
Catherine Dormor (who was Chair of the Group and organising committee); she is currently working towards a practice-led PHd and her work considers the interactions, interweavings or interrelationships evident within and between the elements of woven cloth
Monika Bruckner: Memories are the base of Monika’s work; these thoughts and experiences form her way of life and her creativity.
Gina Ferrari; Gina is fascinated by all aspects of textile art but it is with machine embroidery that her passion lies.
Winy Smit-Vuijk: Winy is a conceptual textile artist who explores themes dealing with motherhood, ancestors and relationships. Winy is also the Managing Director of the Julia Caprara School of Textile Arts which offers a unique distance learning degree course validated by Middlesex University. More information can be found at www.jctextilearts.com
More of the Prism Textile artists will be featured in Part 2 next month including Julia Triston who made and wore the Bra-ra dress.
