Spruce up your home
New this week, Valerie works with a simple design from Sally Ablett using the Water Meadow range of fabrics from Lewis & Irene. This little patchwork project is a perfect size for a small rectangular cushion. The cushion is made from simple squares and rectangles, and some sashing and while Valerie has used a variety of fabrics, since many of them can be fussy cut, you could get away with using a single fabric plus sashing. There is also a delightful picture panel in the range, which also works well as a cushion cover. Watch Now +
Fat Cats
Also new this week, Jennie Rayment has a charming cat design which is simple to create to adorn a wide variety of projects. Use up your scraps and embellish the face to create your own individual moggy. Jennie uses the E-Z Fat Cat Template which gives directions for both applique and pieced cats in a wide variety of sizes, but obviously the idea can be adapted. There are also workshop notes available for paid subscribers. Watch Now+
Seams Common Sense
For our Throwback Thursday video this week, Jennie and Valerie discuss a real hot potato – the merits of pressing the seams open or leaving them closed when you work on your patchwork. Enjoy the merits and discussions by these two on their differing approach to sewing patchwork but on one thing they are agreed – the result is king and the choice is yours – and the quilt police do not check inside the quilt! Brighten up your day
Last week, Helen Butcher was back with her modern improv quilt series – this time, the very striking Rattle Modern quilt. This is a super clever use of squares – perfect for layer cakes and/or stash. As you can see from these pictures, she also adapted the pattern and made this lovely looking table mat. Since it is a modern improv quilt, you don’t have to worry about seam allowance – so great for beginners – but Helen does give you some helpful sewing and pressing tips.
At the end all the blocks are squared up to be of equal size – so also great to use as a group quilt. and the free version of the pattern is available on the QGBI Modern Group’s website Watch Now+
Helen has used a delightful range of Oakshott fabrics called ‘Fruit Salad Selection’, a bundle of 8 fat quarters, to create this bright quilt and we have the bundle in our Shop. (Note: You will also need one metre of a contrasting batik fabric of your choice.) Buy Now+
