Description

Modern Take on a Simple Cushion

Modern simple shapes and colours are used to create this delightful cushion for use in the garden, in the kitchen or anywhere else that needs a little bit of Spring.

Use Texture

Created with simple shapes from modern fabrics and fused into place. The use of textured linen or Osnaburg also adds to the charm.

This is a really lovely design, which you can copy or use as a means of inspiration.

Reuse

You could think about using older fabrics, tablecloths, embroidered textiles.

Simple Embroidery

Jo has also used simple embroidery stitches to enhance the simple shapes. Running stitch or a stem stitch with stranded embroidery threads or cotton perle is easy to use. Jo has also used the pattern printed on the fabric itself, such as the rose.

You could think about adding Ric Rac to the design by stitching it straight onto the cushion fabric, or, as in this case, the jumbo version has been added into the edging as a detail.

Embellish with buttons

Jo also adds texture and interest from her supply of buttons, but keeps within the floral theme.

Child Friendly

This is a great idea for the younger sewers in the family to have a go at being creative.

Jo has a day job as a journalist, but she loves to sew. She shares her love of sewing with her children and recently has added writing sewing articles to her c.v.
