New Videos Every FridayValerie loves a thread saver and is always thinking of efficient ways to use the scraps from her blocks. She suggests that when sewing quarter inch seams these offcuts are used to start and finish the seams. Thus producing a pile of scrap blocks from the leaders and enders. Saving these up and sewing them together into a scrap quilt will give you a quilt for free. Watch Now+ Gail feels that felt is really easy to work with as it doesn’t fray and she particularly likes to make these small 3D projects using it. Simple to make by just folding and using the zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine, Gail points out a few things to bear in mind when you are using her patterns, which come with full size templates. Watch Now+ Dionne Swift discusses where to start with threads. Gathering together thread with a diversity of colours, thicknesses and sheen starts the audition process. Improv patchwork gives permission to break from accuracy as there are no straight line or seams to match. Utilising 10″ charm squares or layer cakes and a rotary cutter, Sue cuts gentle curves to produce improv ripples. There’s no squaring up with improv blocks. The resulting blocks produce a variety of options for a beautiful quilt. Watch Now+ Lorna demonstrates the turkey work stitch, or tufting, which creates a delightful soft 3D effect. You can use this stitch to create the flowers on thistles or the centre of the clematis flower, the body of a bumblebee maybe, or even a soft body for a caterpillar.
