Description

100th anniversary of the end of World War One

As that November was the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, it seemed fitting that we re-visit an extraordinary exhibition by the London Quilters. This exhibition movingly commemorated that terrible conflict and allowed us to reflect on the sacrifice and loss it represented. You can find this video by clicking here.

West Country Quilt Show

Back in September we were lucky enough to visit the West Country Quilt Show, which took place at the UWE just outside Bristol, where Valerie learnt about The Tentmakers of Cairo. This video is available on our website, just click here. Also, we got to  see the extraordinary designs and fabrics developed from a very traditional and ancient textile tradition. This tradition was originally a male-dominated industry for practical reasons.

First Sampler Quilt series

On the workshop front, Valerie shared with us a delightful, autumnal quilt. She used for it Scarecrow inspired fabric from Lewis and Irene and designed by Sally Ablett. You can find this video by clicking here. And the First Sampler Quilt series was continued, where you got to make:

  • the Shoo Fly and Monkey Wrench block, to watch just click here
  • the Prairie Queen and Jacobs Ladder block, to watch just click here

Helen Howes

That month we met Helen Howes, a very passionate modern Quilter, who loves improv blocks. Interview with her is available on our website, just click here. Also she showed us a very simple technique for creating lovely Wonky Star blocks. You can find this video by clicking here.

Workshops from Jennie Rayment

Jennie Rayment maked a few appearances that month:

  • a great workshop on how to use your microwave for dyeing fabric for our Throwback Thursday slot, to open this video just click here
  • how to finish your cushion with Piping – the Jennie Rayment way, to open this video just click here
  • a super tip on how to avoid a birds nest on the back of your work, when starting to machine stitch, to open this video just click here

Mandy Shaw

And finally in that “5 Friday” Month, Mandy Shaw joined us. She showed how to make a vintage pin-keeper using recycled embroidered fabrics. So, this workshop is available on our website by clicking here.
