This is a very comprehensive lecture and worth listening to again and again! This is from our archives as part of our Throwback Thursday programme – enjoy.
Needles & Thread – a marriage in heaven or hell?
Dawn has over the years learnt so much about needles, threads and fabric and in this lecture shares this vast knowledge with us. The relationship between thread and needle on your machine is very important – did you know that Schmetz alone make 33 different sorts of needles, not to mention that there can be various sizes in each sort – and they are obviously made for a reason. True to say that not all needles are applicable to quilters, but we are trying to use so many of the lovely different threads that are now on the market and with some knowledge from Dawn you can avoid some really frustrating sewing days.
If your local quilt shop doesn’t stock the Presencia threads you can obtain them through Creative Quilting who currently stock the beiges, greys and neutral shades; www.creativequilting.co.uk
Update Since Filming :
If you would like to learn more about needles and threads we can highly recommend adding yourselves to the Barnyarns newsletter database – https://www.barnyarns.co.uk/ its extremely informative on a regular basis!
and the new threads on the block that we all like are Aurifil – again available through your local quilt shop or www.creativequilting.co.uk

Dawn is a self-taught quilter who has been making quilts for over 30 years. She has been a quilting teacher and lecturer for the last 26 years and was voted Runner-up UK Teacher of the Year in 1999
A very traditional quilter, Dawn uses modern products to produce her “signature” technique, Invisible Machine Appliqué, which is done on a machine, but produces perfect, hand-done-looking appliqué.
Why not consider inviting her to teach your group, or in your shop – she isn’t afraid of travelling!- and she has a vaste trunk full of quilts to share with you if you invite her to lecture.
