A Chat with Philippa Naylor at The Festival of Quilts
Out and About • Educational, G, 01-May-2010
Born in Yorkshire, England, Philippa discovered a love of sewing and knitting as a child. She progressed from making doll clothes to full-sized garments for herself and her family with a second-hand sewing machine she received for her thirteenth birthday.
After training to be a clothes designer, she worked in the industry for five years designing lingerie before moving to Saudi Arabia and setting up a business making bespoke wedding and evening dresses.
A chance meeting in 1996 led to a quilting course and clothing became less exciting and quilting an all-consuming passion.
Philippa combines her technical expertise and designer training to produce intricately machine-pieced quilts. Moreover, she was using a lot of machine quilting and trapunto patterns.
Philippa has had great success in quilt shows in both the UK and America and won many prizes. They include awards in four consecutive AQS shows.
Philippa returned to Yorkshire in 2004 after living in Saudi Arabia for fifteen years. She enjoyed the opportunity to teach more widely when she was not working in her delightful purpose-built studio.
