Description

Paula and Valerie talk about the joy of American Hand patchwork piecing and we are shown a selection of beautiful quilts made by Paula. Apdf of Hummingbird quilt available to subscribed members

American hand patchwork piecing is not done over papers but sewn together with a simple running stitch, so it is very easy to create blocks of patchwork and by being sewn by hand it means that it is very portable.  However, the quilts are still very strong.

Paula shows us a few of her hand-made quilts and explains that she loves to make a series of blocks – maybe a sampler – and when she has enough blocks, she then creates the quilt by adding sashing and borders.

When times were tough and fabric scarce (or just too expensive) the American ladies would use the feed sacks to make quilts as these were easily available and printed with a variety of colours.

For our subscribed viewers Paula has very kindly offered the notes and templates for creating her Hummingbird and Starflowers quilt.
