On the hottest weekend so far this year, 8 ladies arrived at the Hogs Back Hotel, Farnham. Some were excited to be sewing with other like-minded ladies the whole weekend. Others were slightly nervous as they hadn’t been on a sewing weekend before. Five of these ladies booked themselves in for Friday night. This is a great way to get to know others before the classes start on a Saturday morning. One lady arrived not knowing that a friend she hadn’t seen for over five years was attending.

On Saturday morning, with the air-con blasting, Anja Townrow very thoroughly explained all the steps we would be taking throughout the weekend. She interspersed this with useful demos offering tips and advice on quilting generally. She is truly an amazing teacher,

Everyone was so engrossed in their work that most didn’t even stop for coffee breaks! Instead they just helped themselves to the ‘on tap’ beverages and continued with their tasks. Lunch breaks were just as bad. Luckily though, we had a menu with lighter options so we could all continue with our masterpieces. There was also a special guest student, Valerie Nesbitt, who thoroughly enjoyed playing student and had a wonderful time.

After dinner on Saturday, the majority of the ladies returned to the sewing room as they were so eager to continue their work. Some stayed into the early hours – with a glass of something from the bar to keep them going. Despite the fact that Anja stopped teaching at 5 p.m, she joined the after-hours class to offer assistance and advice to her enthusiastic students.

By early afternoon Sunday everyone had completed, or almost completed their machine embroidery work of art – and how amazing were the results.

The weekend was not all work as some took advantage of the pool, gym and bar! As usual on all the weekends many new friendships were made.

What’s coming up

There are just a few places still available  at our next weekend for the ever-popular Janet Clare with us at the Denham Grove on 24-25 July

Over the weekend, you will be working with Janet to create a fun and lively appliqué quilt. You’ll begin by playing with Jelly Rolls and log cabin inspired blocks, making value and colour decisions as you go, before learning Janet’s free motion appliqué technique. By the end of the weekend you’ll all have spent many happy hours piecing and learning how to draw with our sewing machine! No real life drawing skills are required! Do come and join us if you fancy a weekend of quilting.

In addition, on all our weekends, if you don’t fancy booking a class you are always welcome to join us in the sewing corner as a day or residential student. This is subject to availability. You can finish your UFO’s or even start a new project without interruptions.
