New York Beauty Patchwork block with Sue Rhodes

The New York Beauty block is believed to have been created to represent the crown of spikes on the head of the Statue of Liberty that stands at the entrance to New York Harbour. Sue shows us how to make a series of New York Beauty foundation pieced blocks quickly on the sewing machine in a form of continuous foundation piecing. She also takes us through how to attach the two arcs of fabric, which are rather like Drunkards Path, to create the rest of the block.  Watch Now+

If you’d like to  make your own delightful cushion or throw  to brighten up your home using the traditional New York Beauty block., then we have  Sue Rhodes own pattern for the Twisted New York Beauty.

She has given the New York Beauty block a modern update and adds a rectangle and then twists four round a centre square using the partial seam technique. The pattern comes with full size templates for you to use. Sue says this pattern is suitable for intermediates and ambitious beginners. Once you have mastered these small projects you could move on to make a much larger quilt – it is after all just more
blocks!  More Info+

Stumpwork with Kelley Aldridge

This month Kelley Aldridge gives us a full insight into Stumpwork. In her first video she talks you through the history of Stumpwork . She has lots of very interesting background information on this ancient style of embroidery technique  Watch Now+

Kelley says her work reflects her passion for stitching by hand – putting thread to needle and needle to fabric. She’s inspired by the flowing shapes of the natural world as well as the amazing beauty of the human form.

Kelley has completed a 3-part workshop for us on stumpwork. Last week in Part 1, Kelley takes the mystery out of how to do stumpwork with her easy step-by-step approach.  Watch Now+

In Part 2 this week, having made the wire shapes Kelley suggests that you might like to consider painting the inside of the shape, or adding voile or organza.  Kelley also talks about filling in the wire petal shape with long and short shading and cutting out the wire shape from the background fabric with very sharp scissors!  Watch Now+

Keep an eye out for Part 3 next week where Kelley shows how to attach the 3D petal to the work.
