Wild Gardens workshop with Kate Findlay

Kate is a very accomplished artist and loves creating textile pictures. Today, we have a fantastic mixed media textile workshop from her, in which she shares some of her design ideas to help you create your own wild garden landscape. It’s easy to do at home. You would start with some pre-dyed fabric perhaps. Then with a little help from freezer paper stencils (just tracing and cut out) you add your fabric paint. Watch Now+

If you’d like to learn with Kate, why not come and join us for her Wild Gardens workshop at our Textile weekend retreat in March. Over the weekend Kate will take you through a range of processes including block printing, stencil cutting, sponging and other mark making to build up a rich background. On top of this, you will then add raw-edge fabric pieces cut into flower and leaf shapes to really bring your wild garden picture to life, finishing with free motion embroidery and embellishment by hand. Treble Crochet Stitch with Jane Czaja

This is the second in Jane’s series of basic crochet stitches . Treble crochet stitch is deeper when finished than double. In this sample workshop Jane uses a chain length of 10 stitches. Jane covers how to start, how to turn at the end of the row, how to keep the project edges straight (so not gaining or losing any stitches) and then how you need a 3 chain at the start.  Watch Now+

How to insert a zip quickly and easily with Gail Penberthy

Gail Penberthy shares with us a really easy way to insert a zip into your cushion to give it that professional look.  You can do it without even having to search out that special sewing machine foot that you know the machine came with! In this method of hers, you can also avoid having to work round the zipper head. She uses a modern nylon zip in this demonstration. But do take care if you are raiding your stash and you come across a zip with metal teeth. You will need to ensure that your needle misses them! Watch Now+

Layer, quilt and BIND – the last of the things to do for your project.  But do you know what’s involved in that simple four letter word? This comprehensive demonstration by Jane was filmed at the Bramble Patch during a live workshop.   Jane covers single and double binding, bias seam or not, straight bias or bias bias, size of seam, use of walking foot, and joining the end of your binding to create a flat finish.  As she walks through all of the techniques, she responds to questions from her class.  You’ll feel as though you are a part of the workshop.  Watch Now+

BOOK OF THE MONTH: Jelly Roll Bargello Quilts by Karin Hellaby

Karin Hellaby’s book, Jelly Roll Bargello Quilts, is our Book of the Month for January. Bargello quilt making looks complex and difficult. But the quilts and projects in the book consist entirely of straight seams and rectangular pieces which create the mesmerizing optical illusion. So, any beginner quilter who has some jelly roll and can sew a straight seam can master these quilts. As our Book of the Month for January it comes with FREE P&P in the UK  Buy Now+
