Quilts and Pennants Achieve “Inspire”Status
The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles is delighted to announce that under their umbrella, the projects “A Gift of Quilts” and “Quilts 4 London” has been granted
the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme.
Be part of the Uk's unique welcome to all the countries and athletes attending the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games in London.
“A Gift of Quilts” is being organised by Jenny Rundle and Sharon Garrick and is aiming to make a quilt for each country participating in the Olympics, Paralympics and Special Olympics. Their website is www.agiftofquilts.co.uk where you can find information on what can and cannot be included in any quilt made. You can also see photos of the quilts already completed. The group is aiming for 350 quilts from 40” square to 54” x 78” and have 276 registered so far. There is a wide range of groups and individuals taking part - from a village cooperative to a prison group, Young Quilter groups to family groups and Royal School of Needlework students. So far 14 have been completed and 20 are with long arm quilters for quilting.
The group is also making quilts for the Special Olympics as the grandchild of one of the organising team is disabled. They anticipate they will need 150 quilts for this.
To register your intention to make a quilt please send your name, address, phone number and e-mail address to:

For 2 years running now Creative Quilting have made childrens quilts during the summer months ready for donation when the clocks go back. The chosen charity has been Momentum who aim to help children and their families who have cancer or other life threatening conditions. Momentum was established by parents who had first hand experience of coping with the trauma of their child being diagnosed with a life threatening condition.
Momentum offer support as well as providing equipment and improved facilities in isolation rooms and hospital environment at Kingston (upon thames) Hospital through fundraising. The quilts made by Creative Quilting and their customers were both adopted by the children and used for fundraising to provided toys, televisions, computer equipment, air conditioning, and refurbished the parents kitchen, for instance.
Momentum is run by volunteers and is wholly reliant on donations and support by individuals and companies. The fabrics used in making the quilts were donated both by customers of Creative Quilting and Makower UK.

Project Linus UK is always in need of quilts and blankets as well as supplies of fabric; anything that helps keep the cost of running the office down, like surplus office supplies are also gratefully received. Project Linus is 100% volunteer and you can find out your local co-ordinator by going to www.projectlinusuk.net
“Quilts 4 London” is being organised by Irene Heathcote and Catherine Hill. This project is aiming to make a pennant for each participant in the Olympics and Paralympics. On their website, www.quilts4london.org.uk you can find instructions and templates to download and pictures of the many pennants already made for your inspiration. The group needs 14,000 pennants to give one to each Olympic participant. This project also has various groups and individuals signed up to make pennants, from schools to church groups, from day centres to lace makers and a prison group - even braidmakers and the Association of Woodturners. These last two groups are making braids and rods with which to hang the pennants. “Quilts 4 London” has already collected about 800 pennants and have another 1,000 promised.

This is an appeal for quilts for the British Servicemen and women who return injured from the conflicts currently raging. While the returning wounded are predominantly male, and therefore quilts in masculine colours are particularly welcome, we do have lots of female warriers in the forces.
The Quilts of Valour Foundation is looking for single bed size quilts, approx 54"x72" or 60" square; the construction should be 100% cotton with good quality backing and wadding (please void using flanneletter, fleece or minky) Each quilt should have its own presentation case (pillowcas style) and inside can be a letter orjournal by the quliter(s) giving their thoughts etc.
There are various collection points throughout the UK, and for your nearest you can contact Jean at jean@qov.org or call 01600 772340. For more information visit www.qovf.org
This is the current Blue Peter appeal and they have teamed up with this charity who give help to children in developing countries who have cleft pallets. They are looking for decorated T-shirts that they can use as theatregowns (and hence save money by not having to purchase the real article) and these Tshirts can be embellished with anything at all - infact the funkier the better, as they are for children, and even glitter is allowed. For more information go to www.operationsmile.org.uk/bluepeterappeal (I did think that for anyone who has some of Kim’s Hotspots this would be an ideal project). If they can get 20,000 t-shirts the charity will save £60,000 – and this saving means more children can have the repair surgery.
